What You Will Do:
This role is considered a novice level nurse as it relates to the PACU/critical care specialty. The PACU Nurse Fellowship is designed to prepare new nurse graduates and/or nurses who have no prior work experience in a critical care setting to perform the roles of the registered nurse in the post anesthesia care/perianesthesia setting. Successful completion of the program equips the nurse to independently provide and coordinate care provided to patients within the perianesthesia clinical specialty and serve as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary/perioperative patient care services team. The nurse will be able to demonstrate and model the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Lastly, the nurse will be accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care as well as to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. The nurse is expected to fully participate in unit governance to practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter.

4. Essay (500 words or less) to answer the question: Why do I want to be a perioperative nurse?
Ideal candidates are experienced nurses with ICU and/or procedural area or recovery experience, or new grads who have had a senior practicum or elective in the OR. New graduates must have completed a senior practicum, internship or elective course in an Operating Room, Surgical Suite, or other perioperative area to qualify for consideration.
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred; Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to compact state requirements outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
Nurses with at least one year experience in a clinical setting strongly preferred.
